Stop pavlovniji ! — Early eradication of Paulownia tomentosa in a protected urban forest in Slovenia
Project description
Paulownia tomentosa is an invasive alien tree species that poses an emerging threat to biodiversity and ecosystem integrity in the Landscape Park Tivoli, Rožnik and Šišenski hrib (TRŠ), a 460-ha protected area in the City of Ljubljana, Slovenia. Due to its high reproductive potential and increasing use in urban plantings, immediate action is required to prevent its establishment and further spread within this highly visited urban forest ecosystem.
Threats
Invasive alien species
The project applies a rapid-response approach combining early detection, targeted eradication and prevention measures. It will start with a systematic survey of the entire protected area and its immediate surroundings to identify all existing occurrences and potential sources of spread. All records will be spatially documented, enabling swift prioritization and intervention.
Based on established protocols, physical eradication will be rapidly implemented on municipal land, which represents approximately 40% of the park area. For occurrences on private land, landowners will be promptly informed about the ecological risks associated with P. tomentosa and supported in removing the species themselves or granting consent for removal within the project. This cooperative approach ensures effective eradication while respecting property rights and maximizing coverage across the park.
To prevent re-introductions, the project will organize two targeted awareness-raising and educational workshops for residents and stakeholders from the surrounding city districts, focusing on species identification, impacts and prevention of further planting and spread. Implementation will be supported by the park management, ensuring continuous on-site presence, efficient field operations, stakeholder engagement and post-eradication monitoring. After project completion, monitoring of eradication success and removal of newly emerging individuals will be fully integrated into regular park management, ensuring long-term protection of the TRŠ ecosystem.
This project is implemented by the Slovenian Forestry Institute.
