Project

SEN-PollColl — Supporting and enhancing a network of pollinator collections (Spain)

Duration
2026 - 2027
Location
Spain

Project description

SEN-PollColl brings together pollinator collections across Spain into a stronger, more connected network. Building on previous work under the INC-STEP initiative, the project helps museums, universities and research centres work more closely together and follow shared standards.

Pollinator collections, such as preserved insects, are essential for understanding biodiversity, tracking changes in species, and guiding conservation. However, much of this valuable information is still difficult to access or not fully documented.

Threats

Climate change

Habitat loss & degradation

Impact of agricultural practices

Invasive alien species

SEN-PollColl addresses this by improving how collections are preserved, recorded and shared. It supports institutions in digitising their data, strengthening collection practices, and exchanging knowledge and expertise. By connecting regional collections, the project increases their scientific value and ensures they can be used more effectively for research, conservation and education.

The initiative also provides training and learning opportunities, helping both professionals and students build the skills needed to study and protect pollinators. In doing so, SEN-PollColl contributes to better understanding pollinator diversity and supports efforts to safeguard these essential species and the ecosystems they depend on.

Project objectives

SEN-PollColl aims to improve access to pollinator data by mobilising and documenting collection data so it can be readily used for research and conservation. It also supports learning and capacity building through educational activities and training for students and collection professionals. In parallel, the project works to increase the value of collections by strengthening their scientific and societal relevance, while fostering collaboration across institutions through shared standards, networking and coordinated recommendations.

Project activities

  • Mobilise and document collection data: Improve access to pollinator data for research and conservation use.
  • Deliver training and educational activities: Support students and collection professionals through capacity-building initiatives.
  • Enhance the value of collections: Strengthen their scientific and societal relevance.
  • Foster collaboration across institutions: Promote shared standards, networking and coordinated recommendations.
