Protection of lemurs and strengthening community resilience in Andohahela National Park
Project description
Andohahela National Park in Madagascar is facing significant human pressures, including illegal logging, land clearing, fires and poaching, particularly during certain periods of the year. These threats are placing at risk the park’s 11 lemur species, several of which are threatened with extinction.
Local communities living around the park rely mainly on low-yield traditional agriculture and face high levels of economic vulnerability. This often leads to unsustainable practices such as slash-and-burn farming and hunting of lemurs for subsistence.

This project adopts an integrated approach to address both ecological and socio-economic challenges. It combines habitat restoration, strengthened surveillance, improved local governance and the promotion of sustainable livelihoods. By working closely with communities and local authorities, the project aims to reduce pressures on natural resources while supporting long-term conservation of lemurs and their habitats.
This project is implemented by Nouvelle Génération pour le Développement Communautaire (NGDC).
Project objectives
The project aims to contribute to the conservation of threatened lemur species in Andohahela National Park through an integrated and participatory approach to sustainable natural resource management.
It seeks to reduce key threats to biodiversity while strengthening the capacity of local communities and institutions to manage and protect natural resources effectively.
Project activities
- Restore lemur habitats: Support community-led reforestation, nursery development and monitoring of restored areas.
- Strengthen surveillance and enforcement: Support patrols, provide equipment and improve ecological monitoring.
