Eradication and monitoring of hakea sericea in the Gerês Range (Portugal)

Duration
2026 - 2027
Location
Portugal
Species protected
Needle bush Hakea sericea

Project description

This project aims to control and eradicate invasive populations of Hakea sericea in priority areas of Peneda-Gerês National Park in Portugal. This invasive plant poses a significant threat to native habitats, outcompeting local vegetation and altering ecosystem dynamics.

Focusing on environmentally sensitive mountain landscapes, the project will implement targeted management actions to remove existing populations and prevent further spread. By addressing key invasion areas, it contributes to the protection and restoration of native biodiversity.

Threats

Habitat loss & degradation

Invasive alien species

Through coordinated field interventions, monitoring and stakeholder engagement, the project supports long-term ecosystem resilience and promotes more effective management of invasive species within the park.

This project is implemented by the Agrupamento de Baldios da Serra do Gerês.

Project objectives

The project aims to control and eradicate populations of Hakea sericea in priority areas of Peneda-Gerês National Park to protect native habitats and biodiversity. It seeks to reduce the spread of the species and prevent reinvasion through targeted and site-specific management actions.

The project also aims to strengthen monitoring and coordination of interventions to ensure effective and sustained results.

Finally, it aims to raise awareness among stakeholders and support long-term invasive species management.

Project activities

  • Remove invasive populations: Carry out mechanical removal of Hakea sericea in targeted areas.
  • Apply site-specific eradication methods: Implement tailored techniques adapted to local conditions.
  • Map and monitor interventions: Document treated areas and track progress.
  • Coordinate and supervise fieldwork: Ensure effective implementation of management actions.
  • Engage stakeholders and raise awareness: Promote understanding and support for invasive species control.
