Project description

Flor-em-Flor is a community-based project that combines science, education and on-the-ground action to support pollinator conservation in the Cavalum River ecosystem, near Penafiel in northern Portugal.

The project follows a step-by-step approach, starting with the identification and monitoring of pollinators, and progressing to community awareness, habitat restoration and future planning. By generating local scientific knowledge and translating it into practical action, the project strengthens conservation efforts in both natural and urban-influenced areas.

Threats

Climate change

Habitat loss & degradation

Impact of agricultural practices

Invasive alien species

A strong focus is placed on engaging young people, who are involved in activities ranging from fieldwork to awareness-raising. Through this participatory approach, the project contributes to both biodiversity conservation and increased environmental awareness within the local community, while supporting the broader mission of preserving the Cavalum ecosystem.

This project is implemented by Cavalum – Associação para Defesa do Ambiente.

Project objectives

The project aims to improve knowledge of pollinator species present in the Cavalum River ecosystem and surrounding areas, providing a stronger scientific basis for conservation. It seeks to enhance pollinator biodiversity by restoring habitats and promoting more favourable ecological conditions in the region.

The project also aims to raise awareness among the local community, particularly young people, about the importance of pollinators and their role in healthy ecosystems.

Project activities

  • Monitor pollinator species: Conduct field surveys to identify and track pollinators in the project area.
  • Raise awareness and engage the community: Organise lectures, workshops, field trips and public activities on pollinators and their ecological importance.
  • Restore habitats: Improve local ecosystems by controlling invasive species and planting native vegetation.
  • Engage stakeholders and plan future action: Hold consultative sessions and interpretive walks to support long-term conservation planning.
This project is part of the European Fund for Youth Action on Pollinators.
