Project

BeeDefenders (Belgium)

Duration
2026 - 2029
Location
Belgium

Project description

BeeDefenders is an educational project that uses a board game to raise awareness about bee conservation. By turning complex environmental issues into an interactive and engaging experience, the game helps players better understand the diversity of bees and the challenges they face.

Through cooperative gameplay, participants learn how different threats, such as habitat loss or environmental pressures, affect bee species in different ways. Players must work together to take action and protect their bee communities, mirroring real-life conservation decisions.

Threats

Climate change

Habitat loss & degradation

Impact of agricultural practices

Invasive alien species

Once developed and tested, the BeeDefenders game will be made freely available online in English and French, along with supporting materials and illustrations to further promote awareness. The project will also organise in-person gaming sessions with associations and community groups in Belgium, followed by discussions to deepen understanding and encourage action.

Project objectives

The project aims to develop an engaging and accessible educational tool that raises awareness of bee diversity, the threats bees face, and the actions that individuals and communities can take to protect them. It also seeks to make this tool widely available across Europe, supporting learning, dialogue and public engagement on pollinator conservation.

Project activities

  • Develop the board game: Design the BeeDefenders game through three stages: research, graphic design and illustration, and testing
  • Create an online platform: Make the game and supporting materials freely available for download and sharing
  • Test and engage with users: Organise sessions with associations and groups to play the game and discuss key learnings
This project is part of the European Fund for Youth Action on Pollinators.
